Liddy always tried to think of something she was grateful for when she arrived at church, and that morning she had thought about how wonderful it was to have had so much family support through the years. Matilda had brought back so many memories, and through it all, Liddy had had Paul, Ruth Ann, and their girls right there to support her.

She was determined not to let Matilda get under her skin—if she even showed up for church that morning—and then Nick arrived. Sure, he had picked up trash, and he was a good-looking guy in those khaki slacks and that dark green shirt. If Liddy had been fifty years younger, she might have even thought he was sexy, but he was Matilda’s son, for God’s sake. And there was no doubt in her mind that he was flirting with her Amelia.

The preacher stepped up behind the podium and cleared his throat. As if on cue, the whole sanctuary went quiet, and the preacher smiled. “Good morning, everyone. What a blessed day this is. Spring is here, and Easter is right around the corner. I’d like to remind all of you that we will be having our church egg hunt for the kids on the Saturday before so that each of you can have Easter Sunday with your own families. The hunt is scheduled for ten o’clock that morning, and we’ll have a potluck out on the church grounds if it’s not raining, so bring your quilts and join us for a fun day. If it does rain, the hunt will be held in the sanctuary and all the Sunday school rooms, and the potluck will be held in the fellowship hall. Anyone who wants to donate plastic eggs filled with candy or whatever you want to put in them should get in touch with Ruth Ann Taylor. She will be spearheading that event for us.” He stopped, looked toward the back of the church, and nodded. “Before we begin our congregational singing, I’d like to announce that Delores has decided to retire from playing piano for us and has given her post to Matilda Monroe. After services, all y’all welcome Matilda back to Bonnet, and shake her hand for agreeing to take over for Delores.”

“Hmmph,” Liddy snorted, “it ain’t got that cold in hell.”

“Aunt Liddy!” Amelia scolded.

“I’m just tellin’ the truth,” Liddy said. “I had a visit with God when Richie died. I told Him I wouldn’t shoot that woman since she had a son to raise, but Nick is a grown man now, so she’s walkin’ on thin ice.”

The noise of folks turning around on the old wooden pews filled the sanctuary. Liddy heard what the preacher said, but she could hardly believe it, and yet when she turned, there was Matilda, making a grand entrance, almost strutting down the aisle. She must’ve wanted to give the impression that she was an angel in her white dress with a lace shawl around her tanned shoulders. The gold-and-diamond cross that hung around her neck flashed with every slow and mincing step she took.
